Chapter Fifteen
VERONICA
Charlie finished his coffee and left to get ready. I took the fastest shower of my life and brushed the coffee out of my teeth. I couldnât wait to spend more time with him.
After I changed my outfit three times, I settled on a low-cut tank top, black shorts, and three-inch wedge shoes. I stared in the mirror. My heart was in so much trouble. I already liked this man a lot. But was I setting myself up for more heartbreak? What about my rules? What kind of woman canât even keep a promise to herself? Is this who I wanted to be? The questions swirled around in my mind, each one tumbling into the other before I could even reflect on them.
A notification flashed on my silent phone.
CHARLIE: ready?
My heart thumped with excitement, but the next minute I was disappointed in myself. Ugh. My head, heart, and values were all at war. And I had no idea how to handle it. It wouldnât be right if I canceled. He was taking me to the hardware store to help keep me safe, after all.
I texted back that Iâd be right there. I fluffed my hair and checked the corners of my eyes for mascara. Once satisfied, I locked the back door, checked all the windows, and then locked the front door behind me.
âWow, thatâs what you wear to brunch and the hardware store?â His brows lifted in surprise, and his lips tipped upwards.
âWhatâs wrong with my outfit?â I frowned and looked down at my clothes.
âNothing,â he kissed my cheek, âbut if this is casual, then I canât wait to see what you wear when you get dressed up.â He opened the car door for me.
For a moment, I thought he was doing that asshole move where he tears the woman down with a backhanded compliment. But that wasnât the feeling I got from him. He seemed genuinely surprised and intrigued. Inwardly, I smiled. For a perpetual bachelor, he seemed to do a decent job at some of the boyfriend duties already.
The restaurant was packed when we arrived, but there were two spots at the bar. The atmosphere was relaxed and abuzz with chatter. The bartender set out two napkins and menus.
âCan I get you something to drink? Bottomless mimosas today for $8.99.â
âSure, Iâll have that and a water,â I said. I was nervous with all my confused thoughts and feelings. Maybe some alcohol would light me up. I tended to retreat within and become very serious. I didnât want to isolate myself from Charlie just because I was confused. I enjoyed his company.
âIâll have a Bloody Cesar,â he said.
The bartender served the drinks, then took our orders. I downed the first mimosa like a frat boy at a party.
âWoah, John Wreak, slow down there. You canât puke in my car.â
âDonât worry, Iâve got a steel stomach. I havenât puked from drinking since 2008.â I laughed, and my stomach gurgled. âWait, did you just call me John Wreak? What does that even mean?â
âLike John Wick.
